How can I afford counseling?

Sometimes you find yourself in a position where the counseling need is great but the funds to cover the cost don’t seem to be there.

Here are some ideas to help make counseling fit within your budget.

Meet with an intern

If you’re like me, the word intern makes me think “young and inexperienced”. But that has not been my experience with the interns I’ve been privileged to train and equip to counsel. Most of the interns I work with are pursuing counseling as a second career. They have been actively involved in ministry, sometimes for decades, and have chosen to pursue an education in counseling to strengthen the skills they’ve already been growing for many years. If cost is a concern, this is a great option to help counseling fit in your budget. The cost of meeting with an intern is flexible. The suggested rate is $60/session but there is a sliding scale available for those with financial need. Click here to see the interns that are currently working with me.

Do I take insurance?

Unfortunately the answer is no. Biblical counseling uses biblical categories to understand and describe a struggle and also to determine the course of action we will take. This simply doesn’t mesh well with an insurance model which requires medical descriptions and diagnostic codes, neither of which I am able to provide.

Church Assistance

I offer direct billing for churches who wish to subsidize the cost of counseling for their members. Many churches will offer to pay for a certain number of session or a certain percentage of the counseling. If you’re struggling to afford the cost of counseling, if you’re comfortable talking with your church leadership, they may be able to help you with the cost.

Discounted sessions

I work with a number of interns who benefit greatly by being able to observe counseling. I offer a $10/session discount for clients who are willing to let an intern observe their online sessions off camera.
